As we make our way into 2021, it is clear that cloud computing has become the go-to IT choice for organisations around the world. Cloud computing began gaining traction as companies prioritised as-a-service providers over traditional vendors and tackled digital transformation projects to keep up with the age of Big Data. The appeal of the cloud computing model has only gotten stronger since the Covid-19 pandemic hit and remote working has become the new normal. Microsoft Azure, AWS and Google Cloud are the key leaders when it comes to cloud computing. Microsoft Azure is clear enterprise favourite and sits in the middle of the accelerated digital transformation efforts companies undertook during the pandemic. “We have seen two years’ worth of digital transformation in two months,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, highlighting how Microsoft Azure enables organisations to stay open for business in a remote world. Cloud AWS was a pioneer in public cloud computing, being the first to offer cloud computing infrastructure as a service in 2008. AWS is a cloud player to watch as it continues to launch new services at a rapid pace and is creating its own compute stack. Google Cloud Platform is catching up to Microsoft Azure and AWS by expanding in its key verticals, such as retail and financial services, and building out partnerships with key enterprise players, such as Salesforce and SAP.
